Background on Haute Magie's history, outlook, and how releases are organized.

Who We Are

Haute Magie is a multi-format private press micro label based in Austin, TX, releasing esoteric music, art, books, and merchandise alongside a curated distro of partner labels.

History

Formation & Hiatus

  • Originally formed in 2009.
  • Issued eleven CD-Rs, tapes, and a 3" CDr under the HM000 catalogue system.
  • Ceased operations in early 2010.

Reopening

  • Reopened on May 30th, 2011.
  • Since then: two CDs, two 7" singles, a double cassette, sixteen cassettes, a digital compilation, and seven 12" records.
  • Catalog spans vinyl, cassettes, CDs, bundles, and apparel.

The Relic System

Releases and items are organized under a categorization approach the label refers to as "Relic," sorting physical media by format and catalogue history. Browsing by category — Vinyl 12", 7", Cassettes, CDs, Bundles, and Apparel — reflects this structure, alongside dedicated distro sections for partner labels such as Indian Queen Records, Mannequin Records, Reverb Worship, Self Released, Twin Daisies Records, and Wounded Wolf Press.

Haute Magie operates as a boutique record label and publisher with a distinctly esoteric bent, curating music, art, books, and assorted relics that defy easy categorization. The label's catalogue spans cassettes, vinyl, CDs, bundles, and apparel, each release treated as a carefully considered artifact rather than a mass-market product. Beyond its own output, Haute Magie runs a curated distro of partner labels, connecting listeners with like-minded artists working in experimental, ritual, and other off-center traditions. The emphasis throughout is on tactile, physical formats and the kind of ephemeral beauty that rewards patient exploration.

Rooted in Austin, Texas, Haute Magie has a history that includes an early formation, a hiatus, and a reopening that marked a new chapter of steady, deliberate releases across multiple formats. The label's outlook is one of quiet persistence, favoring small pressings and personal curation over commercial scale. Their approach to organizing releases reflects a thoughtful, archival sensibility, treating each tape, record, or book as part of an ongoing conversation about sound, image, and the strange corners of creative practice. For those drawn to the weirder edges of music and publishing, Haute Magie offers a handpicked selection of relics worth discovering.
