Press for THE WILLING OF THE WISPS

At points the album is incredibly sedated and heavy while at others it ventures upwards and moves to become much spacier, always retaining its antique feel. Bruno's hugely emotional, reverb-drenched vocals contrasted by simple flowing guitar melodies give a giant space to the most mournful lines in tracks such as "In the Shade" and "The Boy Who Cried Worth". [...]The entire album festers under a sea of degraded tape noise. It manages to sing out something that feels entirely familiar, not quite nostalgic, but entirely eventual. Definitely earthy-smelling. [ATTN ATTENTION]

FFFoxy Podcast #7 featuring "Gates of Gloom" [FREE FORM FREAKOUT]

One of the only truly psychedelic bands I've seen all year and the stuff sounds great on tape and vinyl. Philly based Mike Bruno and his crew inhabit the hushed realms of the deep mind. For fans of the golden rectangle, Robyn Nice et al. [CASSETTE GODS]

Mike Bruno & the Black Magic Family Band's album The Willing of the Wisps has the charm of backwoods religious-cult-folk music mixed with a touch of Jandekian isolation. The songs do not reveal themselves to you easily, but the sound of the listening experience is thrilling...if you want to get lost that is...deep, in acoustic guitar lines, mournful ballad voices, and "out there" percussion hits. [CASSETTE GODS]

I'm so proud to see this album released in such a beautiful format. My good chum and fellow Winner, Mike Bruno and I recorded this batch of songs last summer. In my opinion, this is Mike, a wonderful talent at his best to date. [ROCK AND ROLL JUNGLE LAND]

about Mike Bruno + the Black Magic Family Band

A tight-knit family, indeed... the Black Magic Family Band is the warped, doom-ridden 'backing band' to singer / sound-crafter Mike Bruno, situated somewhere comfortably between the listening congregation and the sickened scyophants of this heathenly preacher. Though also based in Pennsylvania, the Family Band contains a rotating cast of characters spread out over the greater New England area.
